Alcohol policy changes will impact members of NARGON.

The new liquor reform announcements will impact on NARGON members in serveral ways according to the Executive Director Trina Snow.

The changes will mostly affect our smaller, family run supermarkets, expecially the 4 square and other similiar sized outlets.

Although the legislation is still only in draft form, the impacts are likely to include

  • changes to the purchase age for off-licences which will increase pressure on ID checking of purchasers, and may have a flow-on effect on the age of staff manning checkouts.
  • Allowing communities more say in the number, size and placement of alcohol outlets.  This will impact on gaining and retaining licenses, and associated costs to providing suitable premises.
  • the change in definition of what constitutes a "grocery store".  This may impact stores that have a high proportion of non-food sales at present, such as Lotto outlets.

Members are strongly encouraged to provide their comments on the legislation to NARGON when it is introduced and NARGON will then present a submission on your behalf.
