Sir Roger DouglasFormer Labour Minister of Finance, founder of the Association of Consumers and Taxpayers and current Act Party List MP Sir Roger Douglas explains why he has introduced a bill to reinstate youth minimum wage rates:

“An after-school job at the supermarket or as a check-out operator, working in the deli or even stacking shelves has been the first job for many young people as they step onto the career ladder and into paid employment for the first time.  However, in recent times that all important first job has become harder and harder to get, with youth unemployment rates rising dramatically since 2008.

 

postheadericon NARGON’s expectations for Budget 2010

Although it is always tricky to make predictions in tough economic times, NARGON believes that the National-led Government’s second Budget on May 20 will make a number of key announcements.  GST is likely to go up to 15% and there will be a corresponding series of increases in benefits and superannuation.  The top personal tax rate is likely to come down to 33% but, unless Australia has released the long-delayed Henry Report and announced its new business tax, the Government here is likely to defer a decision on New Zealand business tax rate with a view to matching the Aussies later.

 

postheadericon Sales static and food price drop slightly

According to Statistics New Zealand figures, seasonally adjusted total retail sales rose just 0.8 percent ($42 million) in January 2010.  The rise was led by the vehicle related industries with supermarket and grocery store sales up a modest $2m.  Overall, sales were very flat with most industries recording rises or falls of less than $5 million in January.

“The 2009 year again saw a lot of legislation coming through Parliament resulting in multiple submissions and reviews.  A lot of work around the Sale and Supply of Liquor Act was completed this year including submissions to the Law Commission’s Review of the same act.  A review around the Holidays Act was also held in which NARGON was able to speak directly with a member of the Committee about their views on behalf of its member stores.

postheadericon 2009 Christmas/New Years Holidays

This year Christmas Day and New Years Day fall on a Friday and this means that Boxing Day and 2 January will fall on a weekend day (Saturday) and will therefore be Mondayised for some employees.
